Why Is Soda Bad for Our Dental Health?

Apr 17, 2018 | Posted by Periodontal Associates of Memphis | Blog, Oral Health, Periodontal (Gum) Disease, Tooth Decay (Cavities) |

Soda is a popular drink, and, although much has been discussed about the negative health effects of soda consumption, do you know what soda does to your dental health?

  • Home

The acid and sugar content found in soda is what makes this drink especially bad for our teeth. Sugar, as we know, increases your chances of cavities and gum disease. So what about sugar-free soda? Even if it’s sugar-free, the soda still contains acid that wears away tooth enamel. To quench your thirst and, at the same time, keep your mouth healthy, your best bet is to drink water. The best water has fluoride to help prevent decay. If you do have the occasional soda, be sure to rinse your mouth with water to help neutralize the acid. Additionally, it is best to wait 30 minutes to allow the mouth to neutralize the acid before brushing and flossing your teeth. If you brush when the mouth is acidic, you will wear away more enamel.

Parents should also be extra careful about their child’s soda consumption. Children and teens are the most at risk of developing tooth decay because their tooth enamel is not fully developed.
