Why Flossing Is Important to Your Dental Health

Jan 8, 2018 | Posted by Periodontal Associates of Memphis | Blog, Oral Health, Periodontal (Gum) Disease |

Many people think that just brushing their teeth is enough to remove all of the bacteria and plaque, but that is not the case. To properly clean your teeth, keep gums healthy and remove plaque, you need to floss also.

Over 500 bacterias are found in plaque, according to the ADA. Not all of these bacterias are bad but, combined with other bacteria from food and drinks, you may be increasing the likelihood of cavities and tooth decay.

Not only can cavities and tooth decay arise from not flossing, gum disease is another health problem that can occur. If bacteria is left between your teeth and around your gums, the chances of gum disease increases.

Flossing is an important aspect of keeping your mouth healthy. You should be flossing and brushing two times a day and scheduling regular teeth cleaning with your dentist.
