Sedation dentistry provides a number of options to the nervous patient to put them at ease during their dental visits.

Nitrous Oxide

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is commonly used in dental procedures. It works quickly and effectively, and the effects wear off completely after use of the gas has been discontinued for a few minutes.

Oral Sedation

Oral, or pill sedation, involves the patient being provided a pill to take prior to their appointment. They will be allowed to relax in the chair until the medication takes effect. The effects linger, so the patient will need a ride home.

IV Sedation

This is another sedation route where the sedative is provided to the patient directly through a vein. IV sedation can provide much deeper sedation than other methods. The patient is still awake, but has reduced awareness of the situation, and will require a ride home afterward.

The study was conducted by the Ohio State University and a private practice endodontist (root canal specialist) in North Carolina.  There  were 100 patients in the study. A statistically significant amount of patients were more comfortable (achieved numbness) when laughing gas was used.   In fact, the study showed two times the number of patients were able to achieve numbness with laughing gas when compared to patient not on laughing gas.

In our office we also buffer our numbing medication to achieve greater numbness as well as to help decrease the “sting” of the numbing medication. We also may combined pill sedation and/ or IV sedation to create a good experience.

Commonly the first part of relieving anxiety is discussing your treatment options and developing a plan to meet your needs and desires. If necessary, we offer several levels of sedation dentistry from nitrous oxide (laughing gas), to oral sedation (pills or liquids you take by mouth), to Intravenous (IV) sedation. IV sedation is also called Conscious Sedation and is like Twilight Sedation.

Proper Training in Sedation is Important!

Our periodontists complete hospital based training in sedation dentistry to keep you comfortable during your treatment. Periodontists receive extensive training in these areas, including two to three additional years of education beyond dental school. Every year our doctors taking special training to keep them updated on new innovations in sedation. Dr. Grant King and Dr. Mitchel Godat are also licensed by the Board of Dentistry to administer sedation.

Some of our assistants have had additional training in assistant’s anesthesia (sedation) from the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology (ADSA).
