Gingivectomy or gingivoplasty involves removal of excess gum tissue to eliminate periodontal pockets or to see teeth better. Excess gum tissue may occur as a side effect of some medications (link medications and perio).

This procedure or esthetic crown lengthening may be used to help the orthodontist see the teeth. Removing extra thick gum tissue also makes it for the orthodontist to move teeth. Thick tissue can act like a spring and make it more difficult to move teeth with braces.
