Dental implants are like "bionic teeth" that act as tooth root substitutes.

They are a unique way to replace missing teeth because they function as an independent system and do not rely on adjacent teeth for support of replacement teeth. This helps to save adjacent teeth.

Dental implants are tiny titanium screws surgically placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium in a process called osseointegration.

Small posts (called abutments) are attached to the dental implants to provide a strong and stable foundation for replacement teeth (crowns, bridges, partials, and/ or dentures).

In addition, dental implants can help preserve facial structure by preventing the bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing.

Who should place your dental implants?

An experience and qualified dental surgeon should place your dental implants. Many dentist may advertise and place implants and have little or no training. Most dentists placing implants have taken minimal training with a few weekend courses. Some of these dentists set themselves out to be specialists in dental implants when in fact they have not completed adequate surgical training. For more information, please see misconceptions on who should place dental implants from the Institute for Dental Implant Awareness

Drs. Craddock and Godat exceed these requirements with their 3 year residencies in periodontics and dental implants as well as having placed over 9400 dental implants.

The American Dental Association recognizes Periodontists and Oral Surgeons as the only Dental Surgical Specialists. Dental implants have evolved out of these recongized specialties, so technically there are no dental implant specialists. Standards for implant placement have been sent by the Institute for Dental Implant Awareness.
